According to The Out-law, it appears that New Zealand is giving at least another month's thought to implementing law that could see ISP customers being penalised as guilty for copyright infringement merely by being accused of such. Hopefully other countries, like Ireland, will similarly contemplate the implications of such legislation and avoid bringing it into force.

I'm always pleased when I hear some good, common sense arguments, particularly when they happen to also coincide with my own personal views and opinions :-) I was tremendouslt please then, to see that the BBC reports that UK government is looking to back open source software in public services.

There has been significant media coverage of the Eircom settlement with the record industry here in Ireland recently. To summarise, it appears that some kind of 'three strikes' rule has been brought in, where the record industry can notify Eircom of people illegally sharing copyrighted materials and Eircom will firstly warn them, secondly warn them more strongly and thirdly disconnect their internet connection. I use the word 'appears' deliberately, since the agreement is a secret out-of-court settlement, seeming to lack any judicial oversight, any right to trial or right to appeal, and even the transparency to see what exactly has been agreed.
It looks like New Zealand will impose a similar system starting 28th Feb, unless some political weight can be brought to bear on the process. In an attempt to educate and encourage this, thousands of New Zealanders are mounting a web protest by blacking out their avatars on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, personal websites and blogs. Check out the Internet Blackout website for more information. I'm not aware of anything similar happening in Ireland yet, but time will tell.

You can now access blog.signal2noise.ie over IPv6, should you be that way inclined. It's using a Sixxs Tunnel for the moment, but this will hopefully be migrated to native IPv6 connectivity in the coming months, as it becomes more readily available to hosted services.

Skynet, the University of Limerick Computer Society under the unfailing cajoling and enterprising persistence of Dave Dolphin has put together a fine line-up of technical and non-technical personalities for your Valentine's Weekend enjoyment. Randall Munroe (of xkcd fame), Christian van den Bosch (Ireland's premier Open Streetmap Mapper, or at least Cork's equivalent ;-) ) and many more people will be there to talk about what they are doing, where they see technologies going, and in the case of some of the open source projects on display, how you can best contribute to them.
Entry is a cost covering exercise at a mere €5 a head for the day, it's all taking place on the University of Limerick Campus on Saturday 14th February, and you can find more information on the Skycon website. Hope to see you there...
