Ireland and the IMF

Tonight the Irish government finally admitted that they had asked the IMF for a bailout. Cowen would not even answer Vincent Browne about the scale of bailout being asked for, nor what the scale of debt that the Irish people might eventually be saddled with. I typically consider myself apolitical, but at this point I cannot fathom how Cowen and Lenihan as reasonable men can even contemplate staying another day in their jobs. They and theirs have steered Ireland on a suicidal self-destructive course and worse than that, have lied to the Irish people - those they are supposed to represent - and have made abundantly clear that they are utterly unwilling to even admit fault.

When the government is only adhering to the constitution (by finally organising ONE of the by-elections required) because they are being forced to by the High Court, it's clear we are no longer living in a working democracy. I for one will be happy to vote in a general election, tomorrow if necessary. It's high time Ireland got politicians who represent the people and perform their duties in the national interest. It's high time the people at least partly responsible for the mess we're in at least admitted fault. It's high time we had a chance to elect people who may actually try to solve the problems instead of lying to the electorate and disavowing responsible for that we've elected them to be responsible for.

Tonight as I returned home from Zürich to Ireland I was met at the airport by Cowen on TV refusing to answer what I felt were quite reasonable questions from Vincent Browne as he finally announced that Ireland had requested a bail out from the EU / IMF. If I did not have a family here in Ireland I think I would have turned around and left the country again in disgust.
